We had a great time with everyone who came out to join us at the Wood River Inn on Friday, December 27th of last year. The committee thought it would be a good idea to add some new social events to the Alumni calendar year, and this was the first such activity. Mark your calendars for Saturday. December 27th, 2014 when we will do it again! Watch the YAA Facebook page and the autumn Belltower for details.
While the Yawgoog Alumni Association database consists of over twelve hundred names, we closed last year with just over 400 PAID members. That is great, and shows a trend of steady improvement in both total members and membership levels. Recently, you should have received your membership renewal notice in the mail. Many of you have already sent them back in, or have contacted Narragansett Council to pay your dues for this year. Did you know that you can also take care of your dues online (Narragansett Council) or at either of the Council Scout Shops in Warwick or Swansea?
Another new event that we would like for you to consider participating in is a little more service-oriented. Yawgoog Scout Reservation holds an Open House every spring to welcome Scouts and families who will be new to camp for the coming summer. This includes families of troops that are new to Yawgoog as well as Webelos Scouts and those crossing over to Boy Scouts. This event draws over a hundred families per year. It is an exciting day at camp.
As the Open House is going on, there are various other activities happening throughout camp including a Family Weekend campout for Webelos and the camp staff will be around setting up tents. It is in that spirit of opening camp that we ask you to join us by taking part in a YAA Work Day on Saturday June 7th. We will meet at the YAA Heritage Center at 9:00 am.
On that day we have a few projects to accomplish. Do not expect anything too glamorous this first year, mostly landscaping around the Bucklin Building and the Donald North Court, as well as cleaning up and opening the museum. For those interested, there are opportunities to help lead tours of camp for the Open House Program. It is our hope to be able to build this into a bigger event for the Alumni, and give us a chance to physically contribute to the start of another season of adventure for Scouts.
We are looking forward to a great year and a bright future for the Yawgoog Alumni Association. If you haven’t already, please LIKE us on facebook.com/cyalumni where you can find a ton of great pictures of camp and catch up with old friends.
Yours in scouting,
Michael Hogan (firstname.lastname@example.org)
