Letter from the Yawgoog Alumni Association Chairman
This year we marked Yawgoog’s 102nd camping season. And with it a very successful summer and Alumni Reunion. Over 100 alumni joined us for a full day of programming and, most importantly, comradery.
As we look ahead to 2018, things are looking bright for our beloved camp. Thanks to very generous donor many infrastructure projects are underway; to include new adirondacks in the Webelos campsite, paving of the main road through camp and many maintenance projects on the buildings throughout camp. There are also program additions and upgrades that will be announced in the near future. All of this will ensure that Yawgoog remains the best camp in Scouting for years to come.
Within the next few weeks you will be receiving your membership renewal with the 2018 YAA collectible patch. We ask that you not only renew your membership but consider a gift to our 2018 projects or the scholarship fund.
The 2018 projects will be a new shelter for the Factor’s Club BBQ pit and upgrades to the Yawgoog Heritage Center (YHC). For over 25 years the Factors have been BBQing for the Tuesday night steak roasts and the Sunday afternoon parade. They have done an exceptional job under very austere conditions (old gas grills and a tarp). We hope to be able to build a permanent shelter and install new grills to support their efforts for years to come. We will also be reconfiguring the YHC to accommodate and preserve more memorabilia.
I ask you to reflect back on what made Yawgoog special for you. Certainly, there is the beautiful pond, the great facilities and the fellowship but as I reflect back, I truly believe the one thing that makes Yawgoog that special place in our hearts is the Staff. Every Scout that has entered the T. Dawson Brown Gate over the past 102 years has been impacted by members of the Yawgoog staff. To use a military term, the Staff is the “force multiplier” that makes a good facility a great camp. In discussions with Council and Yawgoog leadership, the greatest need from the Alumni is to support our scholarship program to retain the outstanding staff. The Executive Committee has increased YAA scholarships, that are currently four $1,500 awards, by adding an additional $2,000 scholarship for a total of $8,000 annually. All scholarship donations are endowed and only the interest is used for the annual awards. We would like to greatly increase our ability to support the education and retention of the Yawgoog staff . . . . your support will be needed.
The Yawgoog Alumni Association looks forward to supporting OUR CAMP as we begin 2018. Please support YAA with your membership and scholarship / project donations.
